What is Field Report

FIELD REPORT (FR) explores the following conundrums to equip upcoming leaders and change-makers by fostering discovery and amplifying our curiosity.

  • Yes, we need to fall in love with the problem we’re working on and understand it very well, but getting traction on a prototype often meets a scarcity mindset of fear and naysayers vs. an abundance mindset of “what if we get it right?”

  • Why can't we acknowledge that our differences strengthen the whole? Obvious reasons, but polarization, apathy, discomfort, and other causes deter us from exploring who we are, let alone how we might get along and engage other points of view.

  • Why can't we just play to our strengths and create delightful surprises? Many reasons here also, our job titles our not our strengths is one. If we can't get along, we're not going to collaborate with diverse mindsets, perspectives, etc.

  • As societal problems continue to get more complex we can't keep doing what we've been doing and expect different/better results. Those in power want to keep it this way. This loops back to item 1.

How might we respond to these questions?

In addition to this, we review and explore our ever-growing collection of signals-of-change that trigger possible avenues, strategies, mindsets, etc.

A signal is typically a small or local innovation or disruption that has the potential to grow in scale and geographic distribution. A signal can be a new product, a new practice, a new market strategy, a new policy, or new technology. It can be an event, a local trend, or an organization. It can also be a recently revealed problem or state of affairs.” - IFTF

Field Report is for all of us who are neighbors but strangers, in the pursuit of better possibilities for seemingly intractable urban problems. It’s part of a larger initiative called Possibility Hours that creates moments in time to establish common ground, question assumptions, and open pathways to explore possible preferred futures together.
